So, what does a guinea pig need?

Below is a list of things that a caring owner purchases for his pet:

  • Cage (at least 40×80 cm in size for keeping one guinea pig). About what should be a cage for a guinea pig
  • Sleeping house made of wood or plastic. Pet stores offer a choice of plastic, wood, or bark sleeping huts, the latter being the most preferred, as guinea pigs can wear down their teeth by chewing on the bark.
  • Two feeders, one for hay, the other for green fodder. A feeder with a hinged wooden lid is very practical: guinea pigs cannot then climb into it, but they still have the opportunity to climb onto the feeder and have a good view.
  • Filler or sawdust in a cage. To prevent odor, a thin layer of granulated wood cat litter can be poured on the floor of the cage. However, if your guinea pig starts to chew on it, it is better to refuse such a filler.
  • Bowl for food made of glazed clay or porcelain. The bowl should not tip over if the guinea pig steps on it with its paws. The bowl should also not be too large, otherwise the animal can simply climb into it.
  • Nipple drinker for independent drinking. The autodrinker should be fixed on the bars of the cage. A guinea pig gets used to such a drinker very quickly.
  • Hay. Additionally, you can buy a sennitsa (special holder for hay)
  • Fur grooming brush (optional for short haired guinea pigs).
  • Flat stone for grinding claws, twigs for gnawing (can be broken on the street).
