The diet of the bitch in the first 4 weeks from the onset of estrus should not differ from the usual one, either in volume or in quality. Starting from the 5-6th week, the volume of the diet begins to increase by 20-25%, and from the 8-9th week, the bitches are fed 50% more food than before mating. On the 2nd and 3rd weeks of lactation, the dog’s body experiences the greatest stress, at this moment the energy needs increase by almost 2 times compared to the stage of sexual rest. In late pregnancy, the fetuses put pressure on the mother’s stomach, reducing its capacity. Therefore, in the last 2-3 weeks it is more advisable to feed the dog more often, but in smaller portions than usual.

In order to avoid complications during and after pregnancy, it is preferable to feed dogs with ready-made industrial rations. The dog’s diet should be rich in protein and minerals. Food labeled “for puppies” works well.

At the moment, there is a popular opinion that vitamin and mineral supplements are indicated for puppy bitches, as their needs for this increase. However, this opinion cannot be called entirely correct.

If the dog is kept on a ready-made industrial diet, then no special feeding is required. Nevertheless, it will not be a big mistake to fill the growing needs of the body with B vitamins (veterinary supplements).

The use of folic acid is sometimes recommended to avoid the occurrence of congenital anomalies and deformities in puppies (cleft palate, for example). However, folate should only be administered by the animal’s physician.

A common mistake of owners who want to protect their dogs from eclampsia is the unjustified addition of calcium preparations (calcium citrate, for example) to the diet of a pregnant bitch. Unfortunately, in this situation, the opposite effect occurs: the synthesis of parathyroid hormone is inhibited, which increases the risk of hypocalcemia, eclampsia. Calcium supplements should only be used on the advice of your veterinarian.
