Ситниаг Монтевиденски

Sitnyag Montevidensky, scientific name Eleocharis sp. Montevidensis. For a long time in the USA, a plant with long, thread-like stems has been known under this name. Since 2013, Tropica (Denmark) began to supply it to Europe, while the European market already had an identical aquarium plant Sitnag Eleocharis giant. It is likely that this is the same species and in the future, perhaps both names will be considered synonyms.

Ситниаг Монтевиденски

The word Montevidensis in the scientific name is in quotation marks, since at the time of preparation of the article there is no exact certainty that this species belongs to Eleocharis montevidensis.

According to the online publication “Flora of North America”, the true Sitnyag Montevidensky has an extensive natural habitat from the southern states of the United States, throughout Central America up to the server regions of South America. It is found everywhere in shallow water along the banks of rivers, lakes, in swamps.

The plant forms many thin green stems with a cross section of about 1 mm, but reaching a length of up to half a meter. Despite their thickness, they are quite strong. Numerous stems grow in bunches from a short rhizome and outwardly resemble rosette plants, although they are not. Able to grow both completely submerged in water and on wet substrates. When reaching the surface or growing on land, short spikelets form at the tips of the stems.
